Thanks to Stargrace of MMO Quests, Petter of Don’t Fear the Mutant, and a host of other Twitter and Google+ folk, I decided to try out EVE Online.

Originally, my interests shifted towards never trying out EVE, but I’ve been on a Space themed kick with my general television viewing that I thought to try it out. Because SWTOR won’t be releasing in the Philippines the same time as other parts of the world, I figured, it was either I try something new or go play Star Trek Online or Star Wars Galaxies, which I have tried before. The compulsion to try something new won out.

I’ve spent around two hours in the game so far, and it’s a little confusing at first, but not so bad. I have a spiffy Asian looking character who looks perpetually tipsy, and the starting Gallente ship has a nice asymmetrical look that I enjoy looking at.

I think that EVE has a tendency to bring out the serious strategist in a person, which is nice and all, but I do have some laid back goals during my stay in the game. The long-term goal of my stay is to build myself a ship of my own. The short and medium term goals are to create a character that can pilot that ship I made for PVE missions, and to make enough money to buy the materials to build the ship.

I don’t know if my interest will hold out, but it’s a nice diversion for a little while at least. Best of all, I’m learning little by little that there are people with different ways of seeing things in the EVE world, even if ‘m just talking to them on Twitter.

On a whim this evening, I went to the Rift forums to see if there were any interesting threads that had new information, and one caught my interest because of something Elementalistly said on Twitter a day before.

Elementalistly was, to put it succinctly, asking folks if one should judge a guild application on the basis of grammar and spelling. While 140 characters doesn’t directly explain everything that needs be said, I imagine that he is looking for a modicum of proficiency or care with the English language to facilitate not only better understanding, but also to weed out people who may not be mature enough to be in the guild he’s setting up for Rift.

Now, I’ll go back to my opinion on the spelling thing in a moment. Let’s go to the forum post now.

The forum post that caught my attention (which may be locked at any moment) is basically a call for help from an amateur writer who wishes to write Rift-based fiction for himself that adheres to the lore of the game.

Now, his grammar isn’t perfect, and I admitted in a comment on the thread that the first reaction I had to the thread was to be annoyed at the title, but then I started reading the thread and realized it wouldn’t help to be mean-spirited. So I did some quick research, found two links, and sent them to him, along with trying to deflect some trolls away from disheartening the original poster.

My line of thinking was simple: I don’t know anything about this poster, and I don’t know what the context of his life is, so who am I to say that his misspellings are intentional, unintentional or a mixture of both? I might as well just answer his points and help him out.

From the way he writes and what information he’s willingly divulged though, I found him to be a rather nice fellow. He has his own set of issues that he’s dealing with, and I wouldn’t have known that if I put him through an intellectual grinder to turn his ego into squishy bits.

Still, people skip to the latest post and miss that, and keep on getting peeved with him or bickering among themselves.

Back to Elementalistly’s Twitter thought now. While I do feel that spelling and grammar are important, I feel the content written by the person and the context of why a person writes a certain way is equally important. You can always have rules that spelling and grammar must be 95% spot-on, but you should also leave contingencies that allow inclusion of people who have good heads on their shoulders rather than exclusion of immature fools.

Of course, that would require a huge paradigm shift in a ton of people to be successful, but it could happen.

In any event, I extended a hand of friendship to the original poster, and offered to help him find more info on the lore of Rift. Making friends rather than pissing people off: that sounds like a good slogan for a positively-powered forum if I ever heard of one. :)

December was a rather tumultuous month for me for a variety of reasons. In addition to school, I was looking for a new job and was constantly rebudgeting my money to compensate for a lack of willpower due to various personal events happening in my life.

For once, I gave a digital gift through Stargrace’s Secret Santa. I bought a copy of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and I’m hoping MMO Gamer Chick, the fine blogger who received my gift, enjoys the numerous hours of immeasurable terror it brings.

On the side of my personal purchases, I had an active sub to World of Warcraft. In addition to this, I bought Mount and Blade and its Warband “expansion.” I spent some money to alleviate some personal depression, but it ended up making me feel worse, so I actually went and purchased even more games to try and forget the guilt I was feeling, and my inability to say no to a good deal sort of killed my budget severely. MMO Gamer Chick, who happened to be my Secret Santa, also gave me her gift, which was a Steam copy of Borderlands, which I’ve played quite a bit.

As Christmas neared though, some unexpected gifts came in. People started giving me money, and I started saving it up, only to realize that I wanted even more games because of some rather intriguing deals and my own lack of Willpower. I purchased Just Cause 2, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Team Fortress 2 within the past two weeks. I also unsubbed to WoW, and replaced it with a sub to Darkfall in order to make an attempt to resurrect Blackrod LeDouche.

Finally, Longasc from Twitter enticed me to purchase Guild Wars with some healthy talking points on Twitter, and because of some luck on my end and some assistance from Ardua as well, Steam had the Trilogy on sale and the Eye of the North expansion was available on the NCSoft Store for 10 dollars. Total damage: a little over 35 dollars for the full package, once I finish installing the Guild Wars Trilogy.

Right now, I’m not sure if I’m really happy or not, but one thing I do know is that I’m loved, not only by my family, but also by the friends I have here at home and also those of you online who comment on my tweets or read my blog. To all of you, it means a lot.

To all of my friends online, I just want to say thank you, and Merry Christmas. Much love to all of you, and cheers! :D

Here’s an announcement from the world of Twitter that makes me rather excited. Good Old Games is selling Icewind Dale and its two expansion packs under the Icewind Dale Complete banner for US$9.99.

Not much else to say about that, other than to get it if you love the setting. Personally, I missed out on this particular game, but am hesitant to buy it because of change in taste. Still, it’s worth a look if you’re an avid fan of PC RPG’s.

I am not a fan of illicit RMT. I dislike the feeling of knowing that I could be furthering the ambitions of some nefarious organization bent on World (of Warcraft) Domination. At the same time, I realize that behind every potentially “evil” organization, there are people simply trying to make their lives better; if not for themselves, then for other people.

The reason I’m writing this today is because I feel conflicted with the actions of one group of RMT Middlemen (a company that acts as a platform for people who want to sell their RMT wares on the market).

The group is known as OffGamers, and I’ve been following them on Twitter, mostly to look at the possibility of needing their services when I get my copy of Final Fantasy XIV. This is because one aspect of their business is to sell Ultimate Game Time cards (along with credits for other games services), which would allow me to subscribe to Final Fantasy XIV without much issue.

Their Twitter account recently updated with a status message, saying that half the OffGamers team visited a welfare home in Malaysia to be with the kids there. Their Facebook account has pictures of the team hanging out with cute little kids and children smiling, probably because someone came to visit them.

If I was a completely analytical, cold-hearted man, I would say, “PR Stunt,” and move on. The human side of me -which is to say all of me- goes “Awwww….” at the site, and finds them to be better men and women than myself, as it’s been years since I’ve been to a welfare home equivalent in my country.

I think that’s one thing I have to think about these days when it comes to doing work. You take work where you can get it, even if someone finds your work disagreeable, but you don’t make the work your life. If you use your life to bring a smile to the lives of others, then I would have to say that the people who work for OffGamers, despite my on-again-off-again disapproval of the means by which they earn their living, must be good people to be with.

Curry.

They say it’s delicious, but the Indian and Thai ones are just creepy as heck. One looks like poo, and the other looks like green poo.

BUT PEOPLE PAY TO EAT THEM!

WHY?

Does eating Indian Curry make you a connoisseur  of curry? Does Thai Curry make you a master of the spices? Of course not!

It is my opinion that Japanese  curry is the best curry out there, because it mixes sweetness with spiciness into all important flavors that go well with just about everything! I’ve eaten it with soup, I’ve put it on omelette rice, on hamburgers, on naked women… hell, ON NAKED MEN! ALWAYS FREAKING DELICIOUS.

Be a man, eat Japanese curry.

That is all.

Don’t dream it, be it.

Alright. Back to serious mode.

Please note: What brought this one was a short Twitter conversation about how incendiary topics have a tendency to get more attention than diplomatically worded write-ups. While this isn’t exactly a serious attempt at starting a flame war, it has generated more comments and seen more page views than both of the below MineCraft articles combined, which I find rather odd.

Unrelated to gaming, but if you use the internet, you’ve probably heard of this small website called YouTube.

Recently, Google released an Instant Search function on its search engine, giving real-time search results that guess what you’re typing as you type it. An enterprising Stanford student by the name of Feross Aboukhadijeh has managed to do something similar for YouTube. As a result, YouTube CEO Chad Hurley now wants to hire Feross to work for Google!

From Venturebeat:

After spotting YouTube Instant, Hurley  Tweeted over to Aboukhadijeh, saying he loved the idea and asking if he wanted a job.

Aboukhadijeh, who goes by the Twitter handle FreeTheFeross,  sent a message back to find out if Hurley was serious about the offer — because, after all, this is the Internet. It looks like Hurley was, indeed,  quite serious.

Aboukhadijeh announced the launch of YouTube Instant on Y Combinator’s Hacker News feed, a news aggregation site similar to Digg and Reddit. It behaves much the same way Google Instant does — as a viewer types in the video they are looking for, the engine guesses the video and begins playing it immediately.

I’ve linked it above and it’s actually not half bad. Doesn’t help me find Kamen Rider OOO opening videos for some reason though, but I suppose if YouTube hires him, they could integrate it onto YouTube full-time and make it even better.

For those folks who are using twitter right now, do any of you have any idea what happened recently? Like a downtime or something that went horribly wrong for a few folks like myself?

Would you kindly send me info regarding the status of twitter, or a place where I can send twitter an email saying, “Hey! If you had downtime and fixed everything already, you may have forgotten about me!” or something to that effect.

Cheers.

EDIT: And yes, that was an intentional BioShock reference there. :D

Apparently, Twitter can be a very useful resource, as I’ve come to realize. So I think I should make a post thanking two specific people with my LOTRO issues.

When I couldn’t create a trial account the normal way, someone with Founder’s Status sent me a referral and we coordinated through DM Twittering.

Ethic of KillTenRats, thank you for your gracious assistance.

Now, when I find myself plagued with connection issues and frequent disconnects, a Turbine representative attempted to contact me through Twitter to see if she could help. I don’t know if I’ll be able to resolve my issue, but a community manager trying to contact me to help resolve my issue brings me much joy.

Meghan Rodberg of Turbine, thank you sending me a tweet. :)
